Bike Trip Day 6 (Wednesday May 20th, 2015): Holeby to Nykobing, Denmark

We had developed a routine of planning a Komoot route after selecting our lodging for the next night so that Komoot guides us straight to our new place. Normally that works great and the point-to-point routes are very interesting, efficient, and usually avoid high-traffic roads.

Today we started out riding along a beautiful little lake, and saw very nice thatched-roof farmhouses. But then our route was blocked by a new bridge being built over the railroad tracks. There was a huge chasm where the old bridge had been remooved and we could not cross. So we backtracked and tried to improvise a detour. After 6 or so extra kilometers to the North and West, we finally rejoined our planned route. Phew!

Following official Danish bike routes number 35 and 8, which were "Cadillac" bike paths with two marked lanes, underpasses, and, everything, we continued eastward to cross a narrow strait separating the island of Lolland from the island of Falster. As we crossed the bridge, we could see the skyline of Nykobing, which included a curious but visually prominent beige-colored tower, and that served as a good visual landmark when we later walked around the small city.

We arrived around noon and parked the bikes in the market square so that we could walk around the city. Lunch was a quick hot dog and hamburger from a food truck parked on the square. The oldest part of the downtown section had many old-fashioned buildings and pedestrianized streets, which made walking a pleasure.

The cathedral was quite impressive from the outside, but not being Catholic,it was locked and we could not see the interior. The pretty yellow tower we we had seen from across the river turned out to be a cafe, although it originally was a water tower, according to a local resident.

The city hall was also quite nice--the lady tending her garden across the street called out to me to come where she was as it was a better viewpoint for taking a picture--yet another example of the helpfulness of the Danes.

We got back on the bikes to pedal North to the edge of town to our B&B, stopping off at Lidl for food for our evening meal, where I met a dog on a bicycle! A little farther to the North at the edge of town we found our B&B. Our landlord considerately let us use their locked garage to store our bikes. It turned out that the lady of the house was a painter, and we had beds in her painting atelier! I loved looking at some of her completed and in-progress works. Charming.

But we were so exhausted after 3 hours of pedaling and 2 hours of walking, that we just rested for the remainder of the day. We were not completely idle, however, as we planned our route for the next several days and then reserved our lodging for each night. We found that having Wifi was the key to both using Komoot to prepare routes and make our daily route maps, and to reserving lodging for each overnight stop.
