Bike Trip Day 15 (Friday May 29th, 2015): Bandholm to Sakskobing, Denmark

Our Penultimate day; we had another great breakfast at the very nice Hotel Bandholm. Bob was intrigued by the cheese cutter, which truly was very cunningly designed to deliver one slice with each twist of the handle. But then we did have to pack.

We thought we might try again to catch the ferry over to the little island, but when by 10:10 there was no sign of a ferry in the waters around us, we again decided to go to plan B. The direct route to our next destination was a measly 10km, but we had found a map with forest trails around Bandholm that promised to lead to some grave mounds.

We first rode along the water past the campground to a little beach. There was a little notice with green lights.Looking at it more closely, it seems that the sewer lines and storm drains are connected and when they oveflowed into the bay, the lights would turn red to warn of unsafe conditions. Well, we weren't going to swim, so we rode on through the rapeseed fields.

Along the road we found our first burial mound, complete with a rather weather beaten information sign that at least had a nice picture of what the inside would have looked like.

But then it took us a while to find the right turn off into the woods (i.e., we got lost). But finally we were off for a ride in the woods. The path was sometimes a little muddy but always passable. There were again stacks of logs along the path. At one point I saw a guy with a chainsaw cutting a log into manageable pieces and loading them onto a trailer. I was wondering whether this was an official part of forest management or just free firewood for moochers!.

We found a few more mounds, but we tried not to head too deeply into tick country and did a thorough check for the little devils afterwards.

We must have zigged when we should have zagged and we got lost (again). Giving up on Komoot temporarily (Komoot was Komfused!), Bob started using his compass from Ireland to lead us in the right direction. We came out a little farther south then expected and headed back to a very nice rest area with picnic benches for our midday sandwiches.

After that it was not too much farther to our very nice B&B. After resting a bit we biked further into the town of Sakskobing to find a grocery store for rolls and some "Skinke"(ham) salad. We returned to the B&B, ate, and turned in for the evening.
