Epilog

So what did we learn on our cruise and bike tour?

One thing we learned is that Danes are are truly friendly, helpful people! A few examples will suffice to make the point:

When I was struggling to lock the door to our hotel room, one of the workmen nearby came over and explained and showed me how to do it before returning to his job --> the trick is to lift the handle all the way UP before trying to twist the key in the lock or it just won't work.

In the Safari Park we were watching cars leave the carefully guarded and caged exit, when the gate attendant said, "If you want to wait until a car with two empty seats wants to drive through, I will ask the driver to take you two with so that you get to see the inside of the enclosure also". We were tempted but in the end decided not to do that.

When we were outside our hotel near Maribo and waiting for the proprietor to show up, a Dane pulled into the parking lot and asked if we were OK. When we explained our situation, he quickly pulled out his cell phone, called the proprietor, and after a brief conversation in Danish he told us she would be there shortly. In fact, she rolled in no more than a couple minutes later.

When taking a picture of the city hall in Nykobing, the lady tending her garden across the intersection said , "Hey, come over her because you get a much nicer view and picture from over her!" in Danish. But I understood and as it turned out she was right.

So as Gustl told us before our trip based on his experiences, the Danes are truly helpful people, at least to foreigners. The only other countries we have visited with such spontaneously helpful people are Ireland and Australia. For us, that is of key importance and would be a major reason for us to come back and see more of Denmark.

We also learned a lot about our e-bikes after two weeks of riding them. Although an e-bike makes it possible for even old, decrepit folks like us to make bicycle tours, they have their quirks and should be carefully selected before attempted a tour like this. To help other folks who might want to do something like this, I decided to jot down some advice on how to approach riding e-bikes, which is available in the final "Zen and the Art of E-bike Riding" section linked to this Epilog.
