Monday May 14, 2018: From Denmark to Ireland

Fortunately the buses were running again today as we had to pack up all our belongings after washing clothes, and then trundle our suitcases along with us as we worked our way over to Copenhagen Airport. It turned out that about 1/3 of the 5C buses that connected us to Norreport train station also continued on across the city all the way to the airport. That made it dead simple for us once we found one of those airport buses to just climb on, find a way to jam in our suitcases and carry-on pieces around us, and then hold on for dear life as our bus zigzagged its way through downtown Copenhagen and on out to the airport at the eastern edge of the city.

It was a good thing that trip to the airport went well and relatively quickly, because we were flying the no-frills airline Ryan Air. Part of that airline's emphasis on saving money to keep their fares low as possible was to use the cheapest, least convenient terminals and airports. At Copenhagen airport, we were forced to walk the entire length of all the airport terminals, which took us at least a half hour longer than we had expected. Since that was about exactly the time cushion we had, we finally arrived with our luggage right at the time when the gate agents were calling for our flight to start boarding. Phew!

So I never really got a chance to sit down and rest until our plane was up in the air, but once aloft I could at least relax and let my mind drift a bit. (But not recline my seat, as Ryan Air airplanes don't have seats that recline!) And that rest was very valuable as when we landed in Dublin, Ireland, that evening, I had to get into the wrong side of a strange Peugeot 4-door, shift with my left hand rather than my right, and drive on the wrong side of the road across Ireland for several hours! What could possibly go wrong? When we got the car, Jerry noticed a crack in the side mirror that had not been reported by the previous renter, so we took a picture of it and reported it so that we would not be charged for the damage.

After a long drive across Ireland, we made it to to the small town of Swinford by a little after 9 o'clock and settled into our rooms at the Gateway Hotel there that we had booked using the Wifi at our AirBnB in Copenhagen. The wall outlets were all, however, the English style of 3-pronged outlets and we had only brought European two-prong adapters! Argh, the things you forget to bring! Fortunately, the hotel desk had an adapter that they let us use for the night so that I could use my CPAP machine and breathe easily. I have found that breathing easily is truly a key for getting a good night's sleep, and that in turn is key to resting up and feeling decent the next day, which is critical on a long trip. So once I got the CPAP successfully assembled and plugged in, we turned in for the night.
