We had a quick breakfast and started off about 7:30 (8:30 our time), which gave us a good long day to drive. The trip through Chicago via I-94, the Dan Ryan, and the Skyway was quick and had no backups—hallelujah! We slowed down by some lake effect snow in northern Indiana, and looked with amazement at 5-10 cars and one jackknifed tractor-trailer in the ditch—the trailer part was just all warped and twisted so it was pretty spectacular. We hit some more lake effect snow around Cleveland, but didn’t have to slow down too much on our way to the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Pennsy also had snow showers in the upper elevations. As we drove through the snow showers, the snow was coming at the car from the front and lit up by the headlamps in such a hypnotic fashion that made it hard to keep your eyes on the road. The occasionally slick surface combined with the curves and poor visibility to make the drive quite challenging. We made it safely home by ten p.m., but I vowed next time to take the truck! As it was, the driving was sometimes squirrely and I felt like a nut!
