Meandering the Mediterranean

Transatlantic Cruise

April - May 2009

Bob:

Having finally drifted off to sleep in the early a.m. , I then almost overslept and didn't get up until 8 a.m. That meant I had to hustle and bustle around to get dressed, get the ship's position, course, and speed information from the TV, and then run down to the library to chart out everything and make a dead reckoning prediction of the ship's position at noon. That accomplished, Monika and I had breakfast although I had to stick to soft, easily-swallowed food as my throat was still quite sore. I also had to talk in a whisper rather than at normal volume, which I'm sure the other dinners on the Lido deck appreciated!

After breakfast I just returned to our stateroom to rest while Monika trotted off to see a film. I rejoined her to listen Dr. Wulf’s morning lecture on the three voyages of Captain Cook, who turned out to be quite an explorer. Captain Cook explored and charted large parts of Australia, New Guinea, and the South Seas Islands. His achievements were all the more remarkable as he was essentially self-made man, having only 7 years of schooling. Those peaceful voyages of discovery he made around the globe were the stuff of legends, and I felt just a twinge of envy for not having been there with him to see the far, unspoiled corners of the earth.

Monika:

The Park West people were going to play "Destino", the short animated film that had been planned jointly by Walt Disney and Salvatore Dali. Dali had already drawn a storybook with 180 scenes and the music had been created, when Disney Studio ran low on money and pulled the plug. They shelved the project and stored it in a vault, but 50 years later they happened to rediscover the Dali story board and decided to finally complete the project. Park West was sponsoring it, because they were also selling groups of lithographs of the storyboard pictures. Be that as it may, the short was really worth seeing; Dali weirdness is enough to make Disney sweetness no longer quite as innocent. I had seen this film before on another ship, but on the Noordam they showed it in the Queens Lounge which doubled as a movie theater. I enjoyed seeing it again but not, however, enough to buy the lithographs (after all where would we put them?).

Since Bob was under the weather I went to the reception for repeat passengers of Holland America by myself, had some wine, listened to the Captain, and left with a nice little tile with the Holland America Logo. But later when the Captain was autographing his books we both went. Bob had already read and enjoyed his "log book", so we also purchased two children's books written by the Captain ("Peter the Cruise Ship" and "Peter goes to Alaska") for our grandchildren, which he very nicely autographed.

Bob:

After lunch I was once again completely out of gas and just collapsed back in the stateroom for a nap, but that revive me enough to stumble back downstairs for the lecture on "Tugboats and Towlines", where a gentleman described ports and tugboat companies on both coasts of the United States. His material and pictures were excellent, but his presentation was quite stiff and monotone, which was a shame. He did, however, show the original tugboat of the Foss company that had been named "Elsbeth", so Monika at last had found a ship named after her! I'm still looking for a ship named "Bob", so if you ever see one, drop me a note please!

During the evening meal with Bob and Darlene I isolated myself at one end of the table so that I would not spread any germs. I found I could just barely speak loudly enough to be heard while not having excessive pain in my throat. Back in our cabin after dinner we all read email messages from Linda and Debbie, and then Monika backed up all our pictures onto the computer and our backup key, including those from Lois's camera "just in case". But by the time my sisters left for their cabin I was again exhausted so we just turned in for the night.
