Wanderung 8

Swinging Sweetly through the Sunny South.

January-February 2005

February 23, 2005 - Driving back through Arkansas and Illinois.

We decided to try to shoot north to Lois's place and were on the road by 8 o'clock, which was an early start for us but we wanted to drive as far as possible northward with the available daylight. The first segment from Little Rock to Memphis was through a driving rain. I was worried about hydroplaning, so I had to keep the rig down to 55, which felt safe to me. The trucks were roaring by in the left lane at 70+, knocking the rig sideways as they passed and kicking up spay that obscured my vision. It was not, to be short, an enjoyable drive.

At Memphis we turned north on Interstate 55, hoping for better weather. It took a couple of hours, but about midway from Memphis to St. Louis the rain finally cleared off, which was good. Shortly thereafter, however, it started to snow, which was bad. Fortunately the snow was light and melting on contact with the pavement, so we could keep our speed up. The snow let up as we passed St. Louis on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, and we finally arrived at our campground at Litchfield, Illinois, shortly after sundown. We had a simple but warm meal of soup and crackers, worked on the computers a bit, and read a while in bed before turning out the lights.
