Wanderung 8

Swinging Sweetly through the Sunny South.

January-February 2005

February 24, 2005 - Driving back to Lois in Burlington, Wisconsin.

We awoke to a skim of fresh snow on the trailer, but the outside temperature had only fallen into the 20s, so we were still warm and cozy inside. For breakfast we had the last of out oatmeal and by 8:30 we had dumped the wastewater tanks and were rolling north toward Rockford, Illinois. At Rockford we turned east on the freeway around Lake Geneva and arrived at Lois's house shortly after 2 p.m.

Backing the trailer onto the pad Merlin had built for their Argosy trailer many years back, however, proved to be a very difficult task. The driveway was so covered with ice and snow that even with 4-wheel drive engaged I could not back the trailer up onto the pad. At one point all four of the truck's tires were spinning on the ice and the truck was simply sliding sideways down the hill-definitely undesirable! But with Terry pouring salt under the wheels of the truck we finally got it successfully wedged onto the pad.

We spent the next couple of days cleaning out and winterizing the trailer, washing our clothes, and packing up the truck for the trip home. We saw Terry (and his banjo) again as he paused on his trip from Escanaba, Michigan back to Albuquerque to have the new engine on his 1967 Volkswagen camper serviced at the local VW shop. My sister Phyllis also drove up from Chicago to visit for a couple of days, and Martin and Tanya even drove up to spend an afternoon with all of us. So we were able to see a decent hunk of my family at the end of this trip, and I got us four siblings to pose for a family picture. All in all, it was a wonderful way to end the trip.
