Wanderung 17

No Rain in Spain, not even on the Plain!

April-May 2008

Tuesday April 29th 2008

Noon position: Granada - the Alhambra: Generalife.

Bob:

The Generalife section that we toured next was comprised of several large and very beautiful sections of gardens plus some small courtyards and interior rooms. You could hustle through it in under half an hour, I guess, but that would be really a shame. We took time to stop and literally smell the roses as well as to enjoy the stunning views from the gardens. I was particularly amazed by the marvelous stone latticework in a small cabana or overlook.

Monika:

We took the obligatory pictures and hurried on to the next point of interest, the "Generalife" at the opposite end of the Alhambra. We even had to cross a bridge across the moat that surrounded the rest of the palace. We met Bob's two compadres from this morning, who had a rather disconcerting experience. Hannaka had her wallet stolen out of her backpack. It was a perfect setup. An elderly lady with a backpack with an open flap on her back. It just took a little jostling, she never noticed more than that, and when she looked a little later, the wallet was gone. We commiserated. Word to the wise: If you have any valuables in your backpack, disregard the name and wear it in the front!

They were headed for the Alcazaba and we headed on to the Generalife. This was the summer residence of the princes. It contains beautiful gardens with many beautiful roses. At one point there was a little waterway with a fountain separating the two parts. It was rather noisy and we finally noticed the frogs sitting on lily leaves and making a racket. At another place were rose covered arches. From one side you could get a beautiful picture of the rest of the complex.

Bob:

The interior of the Generalife consisted of calm, restful pools and gurgling fountains. Aesthetically it was wonderful but practically I had to wonder at what kind of aquifer or pump system brought that much water up to the top of the hill and then channeled it to all the fountains. The whole place was so beautiful and we took so many pictures that we didn't emerge until about 1.5 hours later, and then it was time to get back to the Nasrid Palace for our 6:30 p.m. entry.

Monika:

The palace itself was rather small but still hat the exquisite tiling and stonemasonary, that you associate with this era.
