Holts Take Time in Toyota Truck to Tramp Together in Tepid Temperatures!

January-February 2003

We slept in, possibly to catch up on missed sleep, but we thought we were OK because the Volksmarch at Flagler Beach didn’t start until 12:30. So after a leisurely breakfast we took the ferry across the St. John River and ambled down A1A along the coast. That section had a lot of stoplights, however, and they all seemed to be red! The net result was that we started to worry about running late, and decided to head over to I-95 to scoot down past St. Augustine to Flagler Beach. I kept the truck in the 70s and we made it with 5 minutes to spare!

The walk started in a county park just west of the Intracoastal Waterway. We walked around the park, down along the edge of the intracoastal, and then across a large bridge to the village of Flagler Beach. I was fascinated by the arches supporting the bridge which were so graceful they could have framed a cathedral. After crossing the bridge we curved south to visit a park with an extensive boardwalk out into the wetlands adjacent to the intracoastal. We saw a nice collection of wading birds including egrets, storks, and ibises (we think). I tried my best to take pictures of all of them and got some nice ones. After that, much to our surprise, the trail headed back across the bridge to the park and the start/finish point. We felt this was a pretty short 10 kilometers, but it gave us time to find a place for lunch and drive back up A1A along the coast at a leisurely pace and enjoy the scenery.

The drive back showed how varied the seaside is in this area. Some places are built up with resorts while other areas have single homes and yet others are still natural—those mainly being the state park areas. It was very interesting and we got back in time for a snack. Since it was still cold and windy, we retreated into the tent with the space heater on “high”, and I typed the journal while Monika crocheted and gave me additional details for the narrative.
