Wanderung 15

Volksmarching through Germany and a Cruise to get back.

September-November 2007

Sunday, November 12th - A Morning in Miami and Coming Home.

Bob:

After breakfast we took a nice morning walk in a nearby golf course where we saw really huge trees with prop roots. We finally decided that the big trees with little leaves were some variety of ficus while the big trees with big leaves like a magnolia were probably Banyan trees. Whatever the were, they were really impressive and you could just imaging building a big tree house up there or climbing out along one of those huge horizontal branches.

We then had to pack up and head to the airport, but along the way we stopped for a nice walk in Fort Lauderdale. We had lunch at a cafe and bakery that was situated right beside one of the many canals in Fort Lauderdale. There was even a Venetian-style gondola moored at a floating dock beside the restaurant, but being a Monday and not being in the high tourist season, they were not offering gondola rides and we had to settle for just having lunch while relaxing and watching the canal.

Bob:

But finally we had to get to the airport for our flight back to Virginia. I was overjoyed to find out that Jet Blue had 34 to 36 inch legroom on all their airplanes even in Economy, so for the first time in years I had enough space for my legs and could enjoy the trip. We were sitting 3 abreast in the front seats with a gorgeous young blonde in a form-fitting bright red dress sitting beside us, so we enticed her into completing Acrostic number 49 from my book of New York Times Acrostics. Monika sat in the middle and wrote in all the letters while I fired suggestions at her from the right and the young woman fired ideas at her from the left. The young woman even used her Blackberry to Google the "4th highest peak in the Himalayas" for us and found out that it was "Lhotse". Who knew? I wasn't sure if using Google like that to help solve the puzzle was cheating or not, but it certainly helped us get started. Even with the combined efforts of all 3 of us, however, it took us well over an hour to complete the puzzle, after which we just watched TV for a while and then the flight was over.

After retrieving our luggage, we decided the ease and simplicity of taking a cab home was worth the extra money. The traffic was light and we seemed to hit almost all green lights, so we got back home by about 8:30. After turning on the electricity and water and turning up the thermostat, we went shopping for milk and bread (during which we found Halloween candy for 50% off!). We had a light snack and then quickly unpacked, threw the dirty clothes down the chute, and, completely exhausted, turned in for the night. Thus ended Wanderung 15.
