October 3rd, 2008: At Sea between New York and Ft. Lauderdale

Bob:

I was trying to shake off a cold, I guess, because shortly after breakfast I settled back into our bed for a nap that turned out to last the entire morning. Rousing again for lunch (after all, meals are important to me!), I managed to stay awake that afternoon.

Monika:

Bob tried to kick his cold by sleeping a lot. This really seems to help him. So I fended for myself. There was another cooking demonstration in the Princess Theatre. This time it was the Maitre D' against the Executive Chef. Of course, the Maitre D' was the comic relief and I did enjoy it. I met up there with Susan and May Ellen. So we had a nice little group.

Monika:

In the afternoon we attended another Pentathlete competition. Again it was basketball up on Deck 19. What a difference from our first session. There we were cold and hoping to get it over with. This day it was a gorgeous sunshine and warm. We all enjoyed being out here. Each person got 5 shots and whoever had the most baskets won. At first there were alot of '0's - including myself and Bob. But finally there were a few that got one and even two baskets and our champion managed three. He must have been practicing!! Since the minigolf course was right next to the basketball court, we decided a round of minigolf would be fun. The sea was calm so there was no problem with inadvertent ball movement. After I messed up the first one, I finally got better and we ended up in a tie.

Bob:

I also managed to have enough energy after dinner to attend the last big production show number. The production was based on a "travel" theme and had both music and very elaborate costumes from different areas of the world. It was energetic, flashy, and enjoyable, but in a completely different way than the simple, biographically-focused performances of specific musical theater composers and lyricists by Marlene and Chet. I know that the cruise lines expend tremendous resources on those big production shows, but I couldn't help preferring the more informational, thematic, low-key performances. But the attendance at Marlene & Chet's performances was maybe 30-50% of the capacity of the Princess Theater whereas the big production shows were typically Standing Room Only for the early performance and still full for the later performance, so I was obviously in the minority in feeling that way.

I thought I was finally kicking the cold and could get some sleep, but I had not reckoned on the effects of nasal congestion and breathing difficulties. I kept kind of choking and waking up during the night, which resulted in a very poor night's sleep indeed.

Monika:

This evening was the final formal evening and we both dressed up and enjoyed a nice steak dinner. After dinner was another captain's cocktail hour in the Piazza. Since the last production performance was going to be in the Princess Theater, and Bob did not care for cocktails, he hurried on to the theater to get a good seat, while I lingered in the piazza and enjoyed a couple of rum punches. Having mellowed, I was ready for the final production show "Destination Anywhere" It was a themed show with song and dance from several different cities. They even had a little airplane whizzing by overhead. Lots of fun.
